Douwe Hibma

Set designer

Dutch set designer Douwe Hibma studied art and design at the Noordelijke Hogeschool Leeuwarden and theater design at the University of the Arts Utrecht. Since 2000, he has been working under the name doorDouwe as a designer and builder of theater sets. He works in location theater, opera, and visual youth theater.

Hibma uses his technical inventiveness to create seemingly simple images. This has resulted in playful and playable designs for Dogtroep, Tryater, d'Electrique, Holland Opera, Opera Zuid, Silbersee, Vis à Vis, and Het Laagland, among others. At Het Houten Huis, he received a Zilveren Krekel award for his set design for the performances IK... eh ik and Ruimtevlucht. Together with Jakop Ahlbom, he created the performance Lebensraum, winner of the VSCD Mime/Performance Prijs.

In the 2025/2026 season, Hibma works on the new youth production Atman!.
