Travelling to Dutch National Opera & Ballet

Dutch National Opera & Ballet is located in the heart of Amsterdam and is easily accessible by public transport or by bike. In the immediate vicinity there is plenty of space to park your bicycle. Our small auditorium, Studio Boekman, is also located within Dutch National Opera & Ballet.

Current traffic disruptions in 2025

Large-scale road and rail works will take place throughout the year in and around Amsterdam. Major events are also organised regularly. This may result in closures, traffic disruption and delays.

We recommend checking the latest travel information on the day of your visit via vanAnaarBeter.nl, 9292.nl or a route planner such as Google Maps or TomTom. Please allow extra travel time.

Address & entrance

Amstel 3
1011 PN Amsterdam

Our main entrance is located on the waterside of the Waterlooplein.

The main entrance of the theatre is currently being renovated. As a result, the entrance looks different from usual and the walking route has been adjusted. On site, you will find signs to guide you.

Opening times & access

For performances on the Main Stage, the theatre’s main entrance opens two hours before the start. From that moment, you are welcome in the Theatre Café and in the foyer near Studio Boekman. One hour before the start, access to the foyer by the Main Stage also opens.

When there is only a performance in Studio Boekman, the main entrance opens one hour before the start. You can then make use of the Theatre Café or the foyer near Studio Boekman.

After the performance has begun, we are unfortunately unable to admit you to the auditorium; you can only enter again during the interval.

On foot or by bicycle

If you live nearby, walking or cycling is the easiest and most sustainable option. There is ample space to park your bicycle close to the theatre.

Public transport (train, tram and metro)

From Amsterdam Central Station or Amsterdam Amstel, metro lines 51, 53 or 54 will bring you to Waterlooplein in just a few minutes. From there, it is approximately a two-minute walk to the entrance.

Tram 14 also stops right outside, at Waterlooplein.

Plan your route via 9292.nl or consult the GVB network maps.

Carpooling via Slinger

Travelling together with fellow opera and ballet enthusiasts is both more enjoyable and more sustainable. Offer your empty car seats using the widget on this page. Interested passengers can contact you by e-mail. Confirm the ride by e-mail and agree on a meeting point and how to share any costs. The nearest taxi rank is located on the corner of Waterlooplein, at the rear of the theatre. A second taxi rank can be found a five-minute walk away, at Nieuwmarkt.
